HP fails with Mac 10.6 scanner drivers (4570c)

I've not even upgraded to Snow Leopard as yet (had a long list of tidying and back-up tasks I wanted to do first, in between work) but as I am having trouble (on 10.5.8) in getting my scanner (HP 4570c) to be recognized (keeps crashing unexpectedly when I try and launch the HP scanner software) I started Googling around. On HP's site, it's pretty apparent that HP has no interest in continuing support for Mac users of 4570c scanjet. That thread links to an
