HP fails with Mac 10.6 scanner drivers (4570c)

I've not even upgraded to Snow Leopard as yet (had a long list of tidying and back-up tasks I wanted to do first, in between work) but as I am having trouble (on 10.5.8) in getting my scanner (HP 4570c) to be recognized (keeps crashing unexpectedly when I try and launch the HP scanner software) I started Googling around. On HP's site, it's pretty apparent that HP has no interest in continuing support for Mac users of 4570c scanjet. That thread links to an Apple discussion page wherein the same thing is reiterated. ("I'm sorry to say, but your Scanner will not be supported under Snow Leopard. I don't have any recommendations for other scanners since I don't know what you're looking for." - HP person) So...off to shop for scanners. Too bad because when it worked, it worked nicely.
